Project Description

_

After the discovery of oil in Masjed Soleyman (1908), Abadan was selected as the site for the construction of Iran’s first refinery due to its strategic location (proximity to the Arvand and Bahmanshir rivers and access to open waters). The refinery commenced operations in 1912 with a capacity of 2,500 barrels per day. Following the nationalization of oil in 1973, a refinery expansion project was implemented, increasing its capacity from 460,000 to 600,000 barrels per day (1977), which made Abadan the largest refinery in the world at that time.
